Winter workforce preparedness: Line manager guidance to support staff
Looking after the health and wellbeing of our NHS people remains a key priority throughout winter and beyond. We’ve developed a range of options to support staff health and wellbeing, with evidence- based approaches supporting our NHS people and encourage anyone who needs it to access support.
Throughout winter, we want to ensure that staff feel supported in all aspects of their health and wellbeing, and we will continue to offer support.

Launching the Winter Wellness toolkit and we value your feedback
With increasing pressures on South West systems, we are continually looking at how we can best support you in health and wellbeing, and we know that getting the basics in place is key. We have developed a Winter Wellness toolkit to help identify changes your organisation can implement to improve the health and wellbeing of your staff.
Please find a draft version of the Winter Wellness toolkit which is based on the 2021 Health & Wellbeing Framework and evaluation checklist. 2021 Health and Wellbeing Framework documentation available
The NHS Health and Wellbeing Framework was launched in 2018 and successfully used by many NHS organisations, however its main focus was reducing staff absence.
In this 2021 version the best of the existing HWB Framework has been reimagined into a HWB Culture Change Toolkit to empower NHS organisations to create a sustainable ‘wellbeing culture’ for their workforce. This has been achieved through co-design with our system stakeholders as a toolkit by the NHS, for our NHS people.

Suicide Prevention, Management and Postvention toolkit
One in four adults experience suicidal thoughts and feelings at some point in their lives, and as one third of our lives are spent in work, then work can be a place where support is offered and provided.
This suicide prevention toolkit is designed to help, support, and educate everyone in the organisation around the risks of suicide at work, promoting good practice, and encouraging healthy conversation to remove the stigma often associated with mental health problems and suicide.

1) Please find an offer of support for people working in vaccination teams in the slide deck below. We know that volunteers may need some help too, so we have also developed a couple of slides that are hopefully helpful to you in your role supporting them.

2) We also realise that accessing IT maybe difficult in vaccination centres and therefore accessing any online support immediately is not always possible. With that in mind we have produced posters with the QR code clearly displayed, once scanned this will give colleagues direct access to the NHS staff wellbeing offers.
Posters will be arriving very soon at all vaccination sites.
We are always looking to develop our offers further so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you think of anything we could add or enhance.

Importance of HWB Conversations
Continuing to hold supportive health and wellbeing conversations is so important at this time to ensure that the holistic wellbeing of our people is looked after. Caring for our people will empower them and in turn they will pass this compassionate care onto patients and colleagues.
Anyone who has a caring responsibility for NHS people can lead a supportive wellbeing conversation not just managers. HWB conversations can be integrated into existing 121s, annual reviews, risk assessments – rather than an additional ask.
COVID-19 has identified the importance of reducing risk to our employees. Managers should ensure employees who have a higher risk to their wellbeing are appropriately risk assessed, and support is put in place to mitigate any risk to their wellbeing.

Staff Mental Health and Wellbeing Hubs
The Hubs have been set up to provide health and social care colleagues rapid access to assessment and local evidence-based mental health services and support where needed. The hub offer is confidential and free of charge for all health and social care staff.
The hubs can offer you a clinical assessment and referral to local services enabling access to support where needed, such as talking therapy or counselling. It is separate and confidential from your organisation. It is open to all health and social care staff, from all services and settings regardless of whether you are dealing directly with COVID-19 patients or not. You can self-refer or refer a colleague (with their consent).

Frontline19 Support Services
As operational pressure continues, we share details about Frontline19. Frontline19 is a FREE independent, confidential and UK based nationwide service delivering psychological support to people working on the healthcare frontline.
With a vast network of qualified psychological practitioners, Frontline19 ensure the right help is delivered quickly and easily.
- Individuals are matched with a qualified professional
- Where possible sessions will work around shift patterns
- Provide a safe place to listen and provide emotional support where appropriate.
- Sessions can be via Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp, or phone, this can be arranged with the therapist

Supporting our NHS People affected by Long Covid
As of 18 May 2021, estimates by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) suggest that approximately 122,000 healthcare workers and 31,000 social care workers are self-reporting symptoms of Long Covid. Further intel from the Post-Covid Assessment Clinics indicates that between 5 April 2021 and 24 October 2021, approximately 9% of those attending an initial Post Covid Clinic for assessment work for the NHS.
These figures show that Long Covid is having a significant effect on our workforce, service delivery and recovery at an individual, organisational and health care system level. As such, and as part of our ongoing work to support the health and wellbeing of our NHS people, we would like to share with you an update on the available support for Long Covid.

It’s time to check your Pulse!
The National Quarterly Pulse Survey (NQPS) is now open and runs from 31 December 2021 until 31 January 2022 (Wave 22)
Whilst appreciating it is very challenging time for staff, it is even more important that we listen and learn from our NHS people. The NHS Pulse survey is a free tool to use, with Trusts now obliged to submit quarterly results. January is the first quarterly collection of 2022.

Growing Occupational Health
The Growing Occupational Health programme’s vision is to “Improve the health and wellbeing of our NHS people by developing our Occupational Health Service and OH people to become trusted and integrated partners”. This is depicted below along with the programme key drivers for improvement.
What’s happening?
Following a series of engagement events there will now be a campaign of action through co-design, networking, and shared learning with key stakeholders, including the OH community, service users and leaders, at an organisation, system, and national level.
Why?
To understand the future desired state for OH services, and how to get there through practical interventions linked to drivers for improvement. This will inform the production of a national strategy, roadmap and associated key interventions.
How?
- Co-Design activity – are there any existing forums, meetings, networks, or communities of practice through which the team can engage with any of our key stakeholder groups in your region and systems?
- Shared Learning – are there any specific learnings in relation to OH within your region and systems that you can share with us? The programme team are interested in hearing about examples of service improvement as well as innovative and new solutions
- Networking – a series of breakfast sessions will be run over the coming months (details to follow) for which the programme team would be grateful if you could attend
